Pigeons in time of COVID-19

Pigeons waiting for the trolley!

In the US and around the world, the pigeons must be wondering where all the people went! While many industries and markets have been forced to close for public health reasons, the pigeons appear unaffected.

Many different coronaviruses can infect a wide range of both domestic and wild mammals and birds, although, according to N. Decaro and A. Lorusso in Veterinary Microbiology (May 2020), "Novel Human Coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2): A Lesson from Animal Coronaviruses", pigeons are not known carriers of COVID-19.

That's the good news...the bad news is that, even with fries increasingly scarce at local burger joints, pigeons will typically find adequate food sources -- even if they need to fly a little further. Therefore, without mitigation, pigeons will continue to breed and flourish. Don't allow the population to get out of control! Despite COVID-19, pigeons and the problems associated with the birds will continue to impact industrial facilities, especially as the weather continues to warm up.
